Dementia's origins are complex, involving genetic, vascular, and lifestyle factors. Emerging evidence links neurotropic herpesviruses to dementia via neuroinflammatory processes. This project processes CONSTANCES data to explore links between herpes zoster episodes and dementia, and document herpes zoster prevalence and vaccination patterns in France.

With our study, we aim to inform about important (short- and long-term) health effects and potential side effects on cognitive functioning that come along with herpes zoster infections. In addition, we aim to enhance our understanding of the effectiveness of relevant vaccines. These insights are important for public health decisions on investments into making the herpes zoster vaccine broadly available and interventions to improve Herpes Zoster vaccine coverage. While our results will be most pertinent to the French context, we believe that our analysis can inform policy makers and practitioners in many other similar countries.

This project uses personal data related to health. All data are provided to HIGH in a pseudonymized form. The following information will be included: • health data: data primary variables of interest are all records and variables related to herpes zoster vaccine uptake, herpes zoster infection, and the respective dates of these events. • basic sociodemographic factors associated with vaccine uptake (e.g. sex, education, income, migration background etc) and birth information (age and date of birth, i.e. month and year), • Our outcome variables that we want to analyze are cardiovascular diseases (acute myocardial infarction and stroke), chronic kidney disease, and neurodegenerative diseases (dementia and Parkinson’s disease).

We, the data controller will solely process the data for data analysis. No direct data collection will be carried out in the framework of this project.
Data collection and combining is executed by the processor (CONSTANCES) before the data is made available to the controller.
The controller only accesses the data via the highly infrastructure of the "Secure Data Access Center" (CASD: www.casd.eu/), which offers all security guarantees. Please refer to CONSTANCES for details on data protection implemented in this regard: https://www.casd.eu/en/environnement-et-sante-des-donnees-riches-et-det…
The controller strictly follows the anonymization protocols established by the processor to mitigate the risk of inadvertent disclosure of personal data. Before any anonymized data is published, it undergoes cross-checking at the processor.
The controller primarily deals with anonymized regression coefficients, summary estimates, and test variables, which inherently reduce the risk of identification. For any frequency tables or summary statistics generated, the minimum reported frequency must be at least five.
