Winter school

"Thanks for an extremely interesting talk."

// English version //

The first and very much awaited AI4Health Winter School - School dedicated to Artificial Intelligence (AI) applied to healthcare, started this Monday, January 4th, 2021.

Co-organized by the three 3IAs Interdisciplinary Institutes of Artificial Intelligence (Prairie, 3IA Côte d'Azur, MIAI Grenoble), and the Health Data Hub, the AI4Health virtual Winter School brings together more than 450 participants from 30 countries, with varied profiles (60% of students, 20% academics and 20% of private sector professionals). This first Winter School was supported by 12 partners.

This first edition of AI4Health brings together actors from around the world who share a common passion and research interest for Artificial Intelligence, and its applications in the field of health. AI4Health provides a unique opportunity to participants to improve their knowledge and technical skills, obtained during plenary sessions during three days and, for selected candidates, during two days of practical sessions.

According to Emmanuel Bacry,  Senior Researcher at CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) at Paris Dauphine University, Scientific Director of the French Health Data Hub and General Chair of AI4Health,

"Interdisciplinarity is at the heart of applied AI research, particularly for applications in the field of health. It is crucial to organize trainings, meetings that bring together experts and participants from different spheres: public and private sector, disciplines such as biology, mathematics, computer science, etc. The very important mobilization for this first edition of a non-generalist school on AI is indicative of the very strong global interest in this type of event."

The first day opened with the inauguration ceremony introduced by Emmanuel Bacry who already announced there will be a second edition soon, respectively followed by Stephanie Allassonnière for PR[AI]RIE, Nicholas Ayache for the 3IA Côte d'Azur Institute and Alexandre Moreau-Gaudry for MIAI GrenobleThese three state-of-the-art structures operate through numerous national and international public-private partnerships. The speakers presented their AI-related academic programs which attract talented students and researchers from around the world.

Before launching the plenary sessions, Emmanuel Bacry gave an overview of the French Health Data Hub, a recent public structure, a unique gateway allowing easy, simplified and secured access to health data for project coordinators to conduct public interest research, thereby improving quality of care and patient support, using a technological platform enabling the development of tools using Artificial Intelligence. The Health Data Hub is a still recent structure, which continues to grow.

The first plenary speaker Adrian Weller (Alan Turing Institute, University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom), using concrete examples, underlined the importance of transparency around Artificial Intelligence. He recommends to try hard to engage with users and stakeholders in advance of deploying algorithmic systems. For Adrian, an algorithm is usually just an attempt at a consistent policy but it is key to always hold the people behind them responsible and not to allow them to blame the algorithm. Pearse Keane (UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, Moorfield's Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom) illustrated the potential of AI to contribute to the transformation of health systems, using the field of ophthalmology, one of the medical branches fundamentally reinvented through AI. Dorin Comaniciu (Siemens Healthineers) closed the plenary sessions on the first day with a presentation onf the transformation of AI perception for hHealthcare, from a hyped technology to value creation. He defined the impact of AI on the treatment of health data and its increasing complexity.

At the end of the day,  the participants discovered a virtual poster exhibition of around forty research pieces presented by their authors in four rounds of 15 minutes. For example, one poster was focussed  on "Insulin and diet management using reinforcement learning for self-monitoring type I diabetics''. The participants were enthusiastic after this first day, and gave very positive feedback. It was

"overall a very beautiful first day, with interactive, exciting and convincing presentations".

On Twitter as well, the community retweeted positively using  the hashtag #AI4Health. This was just the beginning of a studious but also dynamic week which offered diverse learnings in terms of AI in health. The Winter School will continue throughout the week via the Health Data Hub's Twitter account, where we will continue to share information on a regular basis.
